What they don’t teach in school, the essentials of outdoor survival

Our civilization has separated us from the world around us. The vast majority of us have little to no knowledge of how to live off the land. These “pioneering” skills that characterized our grandparent’s generation have largely been lost or obscured by a generation of people brought up in front of screens.

If we were to be thrust into the wilderness far from the consumer comforts that characterize our daily lives, the vast majority of us would perish in the span of a couple days. Our abstract knowledge on computer programs and the stock market would prove irrelevant when it comes to how to find water and food, stay warm and build a shelter.

These skills, which were a given for older generation, are the focus of this wilderness survival course. We believe that learning outdoor or wilderness survival skills is a necessity for two main reasons.

Firstly, it never hurts to be prepared. A wrong turn during a hiking trip, an unexpected monsoon during a vacation to a lonely island in the South Pacific, or even an extended power outage during a harsh winter storm could all suddenly leave us vulnerable and in need of some basic survival skills and wisdom. Life is unpredictable, and you never know when you will need to know how to start a fire with a piece of flint.

Secondly, wilderness survival skills are necessary even if we are not experiencing some sort of emergency situation. Our modern day society rests on the assumption that a small group of people can continue to voraciously consume the very limited amounts of resources that our world provides. Nightmare scenarios of systemic collapse are predicted almost nightly on the evening news as we hear of runaway global warming, an unstable economic system, civic strife and wars around the world, amongst other issues that seriously compromise the assumed security and stability of the world in which we presently live.

Learning basic survival skills, then, is also a way to build resilience in the face of such uncertainty. When we run out of oil and your central heating unit no longer automatically turns on when the thermostat goes below 60 degrees, will you know how to light a fire to heat your home? When the grocery store shelves are empty because of looting and vandalism, will you know how to procure enough food for your family? If your young daughter develops a dangerous infection from a cut but no hospitals are open to give her antibiotics, will you know how to bring her fever down and cure the wound?

This course will seek to give you the information you need to answer these questions affirmatively. Whether your fishing boat capsizes in the middle of the Caribbean and you´re stranded on a deserted island, or whether unsound economic policies lead to mayhem and systemic collapse, learning basic survival skills will help you build resiliency and strength in the face of adversity and uncertainty.

By the end of this online permaculture design course, you will have the conceptual framework to help you take the necessary steps to separate your livelihood from the damaging and unsustainable systems governing modern, industrial society. Additionally, you will have developed practical skills that you can take with you to your site as you begin to construct an alternative, more sustainable livelihood.

Who is This Course For?

This course is designed for people whose hands are not calloused from outdoor work and who can only start a fire with the aid of a fire starter, newspaper and gasoline. If you feel vulnerable or uncomfortable while camping at your local state park where the campground store is only a block away and every campsite has a potable water spout and electric plug-ins, then this course is for you.

We have designed this course for the typical person who grew up separated from the natural world and who sees the wilderness as a threat. At the same time, this course is best for people who distrust and have their misgivings with modern day, consumer society. By the end of the course, you may not be MacGyver, but you will have the information needed to survive a night in the woods or start preparing your own livelihood for survivalist scenarios that may occur in the future.

What Material Will This Course Cover?

The course is separated into 10 modules. The first module will discuss the philosophical and conceptual framework for why wilderness survival skills are important for our modern day civilization. We´ll look at the ways in which our current, industrial and consumer society has been separated from contact with the natural world and offer some simple exercises to help people find ways to interact with the natural world and awaken their senses to what it is trying to tell us.

Module two will look at how we can find our way around without the aid of an annoying GPS voice telling us to turn left or right. This module will look at how to read maps, use a compass, as well as how to determine our sense of direction from the natural world around us. Module three turns to the gift of fire that we have all but forgot how to use. We will talk about how to start a fire when fire starter logs and gasoline aren´t available. Module four will examine how we can build different emergency survival shelters adaptable to different environments while module five will look at some of the basic tools that everyone should to be best prepared for a survival situation.

Modules six and seven will talk about how to secure water and food, the two basic necessities for human survival. We will consider how to find natural sources of water and edible foods in nature.

Module eight will continue the discussion by looking at how to hunt, fish and trap in the wild as well as how to cook what you catch.

Module nine turns to the issue of health and first aid. We will talk about some basic survival first aid skills everyone should know as well as ways to protect your health and well being while in the wild. Lastly, module ten will consider how indigenous societies around the world have mastered the art of survival in the territories where they live. Survival skills, for these cultures, aren’t considered to be needed only in the event of some catastrophe or emergency, but rathe are an essential and fundamental part of their identity and lifestyle. We end this course by humbly seeking to learn the art of survival from those peoples who have been “surviving” in the wild for thousands of years.
