Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, with tried and tested survival methods

Do you get depressed just watching the nightly news or reading the morning paper? The world events that are unfolding before us are inevitably pointing towards the collapse of western civilization as we know it. And perhaps we are to blame. For the past 250 years, western civilization has been characterized by an industrial growth complex and an addiction to technology that has fundamentally changed the way we relate to the world around us.

While this industrial civilization has led to enormous advances for some parts of the world´s population, it has also led us to the brink of ecological disaster. The risks of global climate change, the loss of topsoil, the contamination of water supplies and the enormous spike in human population have led to an increasingly insecure future. What´s worse is that the majority of people in developed countries have become so separated from the sources of production that provide for their livelihoods, that when the industrial system collapses, many people will simply have no idea how to provide for their own survival.

This course introduces the issue of sustainability from the perspective of the very real, multifaceted crises that we collectively face as a species. We attempt to show throughout the course that survival is not simply stocking up on canned foods or putting booby traps around your home. Rather, survival begins today, and it implies taking the necessary steps to separate us from our dependence on the unsustainable industrial systems that have provided us with a consumer driven lifestyle, in favor of achieving absolute self-reliance.

Each module in this course will begin with a discussion on how the current system is unsustainable and leading towards inevitable disaster and collapse. We will then offer tangible alternatives to the industrial lifestyle that will help individuals and communities regain autonomy over their own lives and livelihoods. We call this resiliency, because we believe that true, long term survival will depend on our collective ability to regain control over our own lives and provide for ourselves. The “out of sight, out of mind” mentality that has characterized western civilization has led us to the brink of collapse. Survival will require us to renew our sense of responsibility for our own livelihoods.

We conclude each chapter with a brief section on how indigenous cultures around the world offer tried and true alternatives to industrial civilizations. We believe that these cultures are still the standard bearers for sustainable living and can offer important indications for our own long-term survival.

Module 1 begins with a brief discussion on the impending causes of global disaster. We will look at how the current financial system is on the brink of collapse, as well as how industrial society has caused a myriad of ecological problems. Modules 2 and 3 will look at how to acquire two of the most basic necessities of life. We will explore how to secure fresh water and an autonomous food supply in both rural and urban settings. Module 4 looks at how to build sustainable homes from local materials while Module 5 discusses how reducing energy use and securing sustainable sources of energy will be an essential aspect of survival.

Module 6 will explore how we can learn to take better care of our own health through the use of natural, medicinal plants as well as living healthier lifestyles. Module 7 will look at how the financial world can be retooled to serve life instead of capital and how our economic models can be transformed to better support Main Street instead of Wall Street.

Modules 8 and 9 are more conceptual in nature as they explore different concepts relating to how we are to go about securing our own survival. Module 8 looks at whether survival is an individual or a community prospect; whether or not it is possible to “survive” as isolated individuals as compared to sustainable communities. Module 9 then turns to the subject of urban versus rural survival to look at the pros and cons of both contexts. We end the course with a look at how indigenous civilizations around the world have historically lived a sustainable lifestyle and how they are best equipped to lead the way in the construction of a world that will best allow for our collective survival.

We believe that this course faithfully offers a comprehensive look at what true survival entails. We hope that those who complete the course will be well equipped with the conceptual evidence that shows how our current civilization is unsustainable and headed towards catastrophe as well prepared with the necessary practical tools to begin building a new civilization that will allow for our continued survival. Survival, to us, isn´t a “me-against-the-world” type of mentality, but rather an exciting and inspiring decision to fundamentally change the paradigms governing our civilization so that we can live healthier, happier and more fulfilling (and sustainable) lives.
